Well its 2yrs since my only step-granddad died suddenly when i was away at uni, and i have had a quiet day (well clanwars r quiet) and reflected and decided to post this on the forums. Its nothing special but i wrote it and stood up and said it at his funeral a week later.
i was 19 and had only been to one funeral before of some1 i didnt really know, so it was a shock and hit me for 'six'. well here u go:
Eulogy
Ever since both of my grandfathers died before I knew them, Mr Escott or Baba as he became known, stepped into the void and became my adopted granddad.
I couldn’t have asked for much more from Baba. Hours spent in the lounge of 17 Nansavallon Road playing ‘Car Parks’. The car could only enter the Duplo car park if I could correctly name its colour. Thus I learnt the main colours and in time, types of cars.
Holidays were spent in the caravan down at Praa Sands, exploring the sand dunes and impromptu cricket matches with neighbours after tea. These were halcyon days for a young boy reaching his teens.
Exeter and Taunton were other favourite holiday destinations for Nana, Baba and I. Baba and I must have viewed every room in Exeter Museum many times over and the adjacent Fossil and Rock shop. Such was our joint love of history.
Algarve trips were always interesting. Getting free rides through the airport terminals on a motorized buggy was always a bonus when Baba was with us.
My love of woodwork and the like stemmed from his little DIY room under the dining room. I could drill holes, nail in tacks and saw for ages. I was kept busy, forget time and be kept out of Nana’s way when she was preparing tea or doing committee work.
I never found out much about Baba’s early life, before me or even Nana was in it. My one major regret was never finding out about his experiences in the War. A period of British history which I find fascinating. From what I do know he was a loyal, hardworking and trustworthy gentleman.
He instilled much knowledge upon me and helped to shape the man I am today. He poured so much time and love into me and I only hope that I was able to repay him, if only half as much back.
Goodbye Baba, I love you very much, and will miss you even more.
